Sea burials in Germany take place at the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The burial is conducted in specially designated sea areas that meet strict requirements.

General Regulations

  • Minimum Distance from Coast: The burial must take place at least 3 nautical miles (approx. 5.5 km) from the coast.
  • Designated Sea Areas: The burial areas are determined by the relevant authorities.
  • Protected Zones: The positions are located outside shipping routes and fishing zones to ensure undisturbed rest.

Baltic Sea

The Baltic Sea is a popular location for sea burials due to its sheltered position and many coastal cities.

Mecklenburg Bay

  • Warnemuende – Off the coast of the seaside resort Warnemuende, one of the best-known departure ports.
  • Heiligendamm – Near Germany's oldest seaside resort.
  • Ahrenshoop – Off the Fischland-Darss-Zingst peninsula.
  • Darss Point – At the northern tip of the peninsula.
  • Wismar – In Wismar Bay.

Luebeck Bay

  • Travemuende – Well-known port on Luebeck Bay.

North Sea

Sea burials are also possible at the North Sea, often departing from Lower Saxon ports.

  • Off Mellum Island – Uninhabited island in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park.
  • Jade Bight Area – Bay on the Lower Saxon coast.

Protected Areas and Peace

All burial areas are protected zones:

  • No commercial fishing permitted
  • No shipping routes cross the areas
  • The peace of the deceased is permanently ensured

Relatives can later visit nearby coastal towns, beaches, and piers to remember near the burial site.
